Situated at the heart of the black forest is the 1198 m high meadow summit of Hinterwaldkopf offering a magnificent 360 degrees uninterrupted panoramic view of the black-forest region. The view includes the surrounding mountains of Feldberg, Toter Mann, Schauinsland, Roßkopf, Kandel, Kaiserstuhl, and the Vosges, as well as the picturesque valley of Dreisamtal.
The Hinterwaldkopf summit can be approached either from the Himmelreich train-station (454 m) or from the Hinterzarten train-station (869 m). Hikers trails guided by yellow or white-blue diamonds lead to the summit. However, it is worth noting that due to the lesser difference in elevation, the route from Hinterzarten is more comfortable especially for beginners'-level hikers with some basic experience. Nevertheless, the winding paths through the forests and meadows do not present any significant technical difficulties, but the rather long hike requires a good level of fitness. However, the breath-taking view is totally worth the effort.
Although Hinterwaldkopf serves as a ski destination in winter, the best time to visit is in spring, early summer, and early autumn. In midsummer, it can be quite hot and in late autumn, you may encounter some snow on the summit. The combination of ice and autumn leaves can result in slippery trails. Sturdy hiking boots and trekking poles are therefore recommended.
Before you make your way back down into the valley, a stop at the nearby cozy restaurants is highly recommended. Höfener Hütte is on the ascent from Himmelreich while the Hinterwaldkopf-Hütte at 1120 m just below the summit is on the Hinterzarten ascent side. Unless affected by Covid-19 restrictions, the huts are open all year-round offer fresh alpine cuisine and an excellent selection of drinks. It’s worth immersing in regional specialties while enjoying the surrounding spectacular landscapes.
